How Long Do Ceramic Coatings Last?

Ceramic coatings are one of the most durable paint protection options available in the car detailing industry. They have a much stronger chemical bond with the paintwork compared to waxes and sealants, so can last several years before they need reapplying. In this guide, we’ll take you through everything you need to know about ceramic coating longevity and durability.

Average Ceramic Coating Lifespan

Ceramic coatings typically last for 3-5 years. However, the precise longevity depends on several factors including:

  • The quality of the coating – some have a longer maximum lifespan than others.
  • How well the surface was prepared – this is essential to achieve a proper bond with the paint.
  • Installation technique – there are several variables here including flash time, layering, cure time, etc.
  • Maintenance – a well cared-for coating will last significantly longer than a neglected one.
  • Environment – more exposure to airborne contamination and traffic film will degrade the coating faster.

Ceramic coatings last far longer than waxes and sealants because they chemically bond to the surface. Coatings also form a much harder layer of protection once fully cured, meaning they are more capable of withstanding harsher conditions.

What Affects Ceramic Coating Longevity?

In this next section of the article, we’ll take a deeper dive into the five key factors that affect how long a coating is capable of lasting. These factors are:

  • Coating quality
  • Surface preparation
  • Installation technique
  • Maintenance
  • Environmental factors

Coating Quality

The quality of ceramic coatings varies considerably. Some coatings are geared towards DIY application, and typically have a lower solids content which makes them easier to apply, but also means they’re softer and less durable. Professional-grade ceramic coatings generally contain a higher solids content which makes them harder and more chemically resistant.

Here are some popular ceramic coatings and their maximum potential lifespans when applied and maintained correctly.

Surface Preparation

One of the most crucial factors that affects how long the ceramic coating actually lasts for, is how well the surface is prepared beforehand. In order for the coating to achieve a chemical bond with the paintwork, the surface needs to be completely clean before application.

In order to prepare the paint, it must be:

  • Thoroughly washed and chemically decontaminated (iron and tar removal).
  • Treated with a clay bar to remove any remaining bonded contamination.
  • Machine polished to remove clear coat defects and any old protection.
  • Treated with a panel wipe solution to remove any remaining oils and residues.

If any of these stages are skipped, then the surface will not be adequately prepared and the coating will fail after a matter of weeks. The preparation process actually takes significantly longer than the application process, and generally takes 1-2 days to complete.

Installation Technique

The coating needs to be applied correctly and in the proper conditions to ensure it bonds with the paintwork. The basic application process is as follows:

  • The coating liquid is drizzled onto an applicator pad.
  • The applicator is used to spread the coating across a small area in a cross-hatch pattern to ensure even coverage.
  • The coating is left to “flash” which is when it bonds to the surface.
  • The remaining residue is gently but thoroughly removed using a microfibre towel.
  • The car is stored indoors for the initial cure before it is exposed to the elements.

Although the basic process remains the same, there are many variables which need to be accounted for when applying different coatings. These include:

  • Flash time – some coatings take just 10-15 seconds to flash, others take several minutes before the residue can be removed with a microfibre towel.
  • Layers – some coatings are applied in a single-layer whilst others require a multi-layer system.
  • Temperature and humidity – the ideal temperature and humidity range varies from coating to coating. It’s important to stay within this range to ensure the coating can bond. Coatings should also never be applied in direct sunlight.
  • Initial cure time – the car needs to be kept indoors for the initial cure. For some coatings this is around 4-hours, and for others it can be up to 24 hours.

Some common installation errors also include applying too little or too much coating to the applicator, trying to coat too large of an area at once, and wiping too hard with the microfibre towel when removing the residue.

Maintenance

Once a ceramic coating has been applied, the vehicle will be easier to maintain and should stay cleaner between washes. However, it’s a very common misconception that coated cars can be neglected without consequence.

It’s important to properly care for the coating in order to keep it performing to its maximum potential. Here are some important rules to keep in mind:

  • The coating should not be washed or exposed to any chemicals for the first 7-14 days after application.
  • Ceramic coated cars should never be taken to automatic or roadside car washes.
  • The paintwork should always be pre-washed before the contact wash.
  • A “safe” wash method should be used e.g. the two bucket wash method or multi-mitt method.
  • High-quality microfibre should be used to wash and dry the vehicle.
  • The car should be washed ideally every 2 weeks, and no less than monthly.
  • Bird droppings and tree sap should be removed as quickly as possible by washing the vehicle safely.

Coating Decontamination

Keeping the coating clean will help to reduce contamination build-up which can clog the coating and mask its water repellent properties. However, it’s still possible for this contamination to build up over the course of several months even if it is washed frequently. Common contaminants include:

  • Iron fallout
  • Tar spots
  • Mineral deposits

A ceramic coated car should typically be treated to a chemical decontamination using specialist products, every 6 months or 5000 miles – whichever comes first. This will help to keep the coating fresh and make it last as long as possible.

Note: a clay bar (or synthetic clay mitt, clay towel etc.) should never be used on a ceramic coating as this will mar the finish. Instead, only chemicals should be used to decontaminate the surface e.g. iron fallout remover, tar remover, acidic car shampoo, and water spot remover.

Environmental Factors

If a ceramic coating is exposed to harsher conditions, it will degrade more quickly. There are several factors to consider here including:

  • Storage – the same coating will last longer on a car that’s stored in a garage, compared to outdoors.
  • Driving frequency – driving a car more often will expose it to more dirt. This will degrade the coating faster.
  • Climate – inclement weather conditions create a harsher environment which can wear the coating more quickly.

These environmental factors are largely out of the owners control, but washing the car frequently and chemically decontaminating it when required, will help to mitigate their effect.

How Long Do Ceramic Coatings Last on Other Surfaces?

Ceramic coatings aren’t just applied to the paint. They can also be used on other surfaces of the vehicle. These surfaces are usually treated to specialist coatings. These are designed to bond properly to the specific finish, and withstand the conditions it’s typically subjected to.

Here are some of the most common areas that can be ceramic coated, and how long the coating typically lasts:

  • Alloys: 1-2 years
  • Windscreen: 6-12 months (1-2 years on side windows)
  • Plastic trim: 1-2 years
  • Leather/ interior surfaces: 6-12 months

Tips to Extend the Lifespan of a Ceramic Coating

Some things you can do to help your coating last as long as possible include:

  • Washing the car frequently – ideally the coating should be washed fortnightly, and no less than monthly.
  • Use safe wash techniques – to prevent swirl marks and scratches.
  • Remove bird droppings and tree sap as soon as possible – using safe wash techniques to prevent damage.
  • Chemically decontaminate the coating – typically every 6 months to restore the performance.
  • Try and park indoors – this will reduce airborne contamination build-up.
  • Avoid aggressive chemicals – caustic/ powerful chemicals can slowly degrade the coating.

Signs That a Ceramic Coating Needs Reinstalling

If your car has already been coated for several years, it could be coming towards the end of its lifespan. If the water beading and sheeting are looking flat after the surface has been chemically decontaminated, then it’s a key sign that the coating needs reinstalling.

What to Do When a Coating is at the End of its Lifespan?

If the coating has reached the end of its lifespan, then the surface will need to be properly prepared again before a new coating can be applied. This involves decontaminating, machine polishing and degreasing the surface. If the new coating is applied directly on top of the old layer, it will not achieve a proper bond and will fail in a matter of weeks or months.

Are There Any Other More Durable Paint Protection Options?

If you’re looking for a more durable option compared to a ceramic coating, then you may want to consider paint protection film (PPF). This is a clear polyurethane film that physically shields the finish. PPF provides abrasion resistance so can protect against stone chips and scratches, something a ceramic coating is unable to do. PPF can also last 10+ years before it needs replacing. Please visit our PPF service page for more information.
