Paint protection film (PPF) offers the industry-leading level of protection for a car’s paintwork. In this guide, we’ll be outlining how long PPF actually lasts, and the variables that affect it, so you can decide if it’s the best option for your vehicle.

The Quick Answer

Paint Protection Film (PPF) can last for up to 12 years on a car’s paintwork. The precise longevity depends on several factors including:

  • The type of film which has been applied – some manufacturers make longer lasting PPF than others.
  • How well the PPF is applied – proper installation is crucial to allow the film to last as long as it is capable of.
  • How well the PPF is maintained – looking after the surface using the correct chemicals and techniques will ensure it lasts as long as possible.
  • Environmental conditions – subjecting the PPF to harsher conditions (e.g. outdoor storage and heavier driving) can have an impact on the longevity.;.

Longevity Depends on the Film

There are many different paint protection film manufactures available, and the quality of the film can vary widely between them. Reputable film manufacturers will offer a warranty period, provided their film is applied by a certified installer. The warranty period typically refers to the length of time that coverage against yellowing, blistering and cracking is provided.

Here are some of the most popular paint protection films on the market, and how long they can last for.

Proper PPF Installation is Crucial

Applying the longest lasting film available is irrelevant if the installation process is done incorrectly. The process requires skill and time, and should only ever be carried out by a trained PPF installer, otherwise it’s likely to fail very quickly. Failed PPF comes in the form of peeling edges, cracking and cloudy patches – something that can be expensive and time-consuming to rectify. Hence, it’s essential to choose a skilled PPF installer for your vehicle.

Here’s a quick summary of the steps involved in paint protection film installation:

  • First we assess the vehicle’s current condition and discuss the level of coverage required with the customer.
  • The vehicle is washed thoroughly and decontaminated using an iron fallout remover, tar remover, and a clay bar to ensure the surface is completely clean and smooth.
  • Each panel is then prepared and degreased to ensure the film bonds correctly.
  • The make and model of the vehicle is matched to a database which provides the dimensions of the PPF pieces required.
  • The film is then printed and some sections are cut to the required dimensions.
  • The film is treated to ensure it adheres and is placed on the panel.
  • A squeegee is then used to gently press the film down and remove any trapped air bubbles.
  • Any excess film is then cut and the surface is wiped to remove any excess liquid.
  • The film is then allowed to cure for 24-48 hours indoors.

Not only do these steps require the correct tools and a trained technician, but they also must be performed in a controlled environment. This means the PPF should be applied indoors to ensure a dust-free environment, and in the correct temperature and humidity range which allows the film to bond and cure properly.

Maintenance is Key

Once the film has been applied, it also needs to be properly cared for and maintained to ensure it lasts for its maximum capable lifespan. This involves using the correct techniques and chemicals to keep the film in excellent condition. Here are some of the key things to keep in mind when it comes to washing and maintaining PPF:

  • Do not wash the car for at least 7 days after application.
  • Pre-wash the vehicle before making contact with a wash mitt, by using dedicated car detailing chemicals which are mild but effective cleaners.
  • Use a safe wash technique (e.g. the two bucket method) combined with a high-quality shampoo and wash mitt to clean the vehicle.
  • Use a soft, plush microfibre towel to safely dry the vehicle.
  • Avoid using a pressure washer directly on the film’s edges.
  • Avoid using tar removers on the film’s edges as this can cause the film to lift.
  • Only use protective products which are compatible with the PPF. For example, specific ceramic coatings and sealants can be applied to the film to enhance the surface characteristics, but certain products should be avoided such as waxes which contain hydrocarbons (e.g. naphtha and kerosene).
  • Avoid using aggressive or corrosive chemicals to wash the car.
  • Do not use clay bars (or synthetic clay media such as clay mitts/ clay towels) on PPF.
  • Do not take the car to an automatic or roadside car wash station.

Most PPF installers also offer a maintenance plan designed for customers who have had their car’s protected by themselves. This ensures the car is professionally washed to maintain the condition of the film and ensure the longevity can be achieved.

Other Variables Affecting PPF Longevity

There are also a few other environmental variables that can affect how long the paint protection film lasts in practice including:

  • How dirty the car gets between washes.
  • Where the car is stored e.g. garage or outdoors.
  • How often the car is driven (and how aggressively).

What Happens When PPF is at the End of Its Lifespan

It is important not to leave the film on a vehicle for too long, even if the film still looks in perfect condition at the end of the warranty. If PPF is left on for too long, it will become more difficult to remove and in some cases can cause damage to the paintwork underneath.

When your car’s PPF is at the end of its lifespan, we can safely remove it using a heat source to carefully peel it away from the surface. This is not a process that should be attempted at home, and should only be done by a trained professional to ensure the paint remains undamaged.

After the film has been removed, a fresh layer can be reapplied. Alternatively, you do not have to apply the film again, and can even try a different form of paint protection instead such as a ceramic coating.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Benefits of PPF?

The benefits of paint protection film include:

  • Physical protection against impact and abrasion, helping to shield the paintwork from scratches and stone chips.
  • Self-healing technology means light swirl marks and scratches can disappear when the film is exposed to heat.
  • UV protection helps to maintain the paintwork’s colour and clarity.
  • Chemical resistance against bird droppings, traffic film and road salt.
  • Can help to improve the resale value of the vehicle.
  • Makes washing and maintenance easier.

How Much Does PPF Cost?

Paint protection film (PPF) costs between £1500 and £4000 on average in the UK. The exact cost depends on the area being covered (e.g. front-end only or full car PPF) and the type of film being applied. Visit our PPF service page for more information and get in touch for a quote to suit your requirements.

What is PPF Made Of?

PPF is made from a urethane film. It’s a physical film that sits over the paintwork to protect it from chemicals and abrasion. Please visit this article explaining exactly what PPF is and the benefits to find out more information.

What Happens if the PPF gets Damaged?

The film is designed to protect the paintwork underneath from abrasion and stone chips, but that doesn’t mean it’s impenetrable. Fortunately, the benefit of PPF is that it can be easily replaced in the event of damage – a lot more easily than the paintwork can be!

In minor cases, the film can be heated to remove light defects, and in more severe cases the film can be removed and replaced so there’s a fresh layer of protection. As South Wales’ premium PPF installers, we can help if your PPF gets damaged.
